With endless miles of rugged coastline buffered by the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean and meandering medieval city streets, Portugal is a hiker’s paradise.

Portugal crams a lot of variety into a small package. From multi-day treks along windswept beaches to trails tracing dramatic clifftops and vineyard-dotted valleys, it offers a little something for every type of hiking enthusiast.

Lisbon, blessed with more hours of annual sunshine than any other capital in mainland Europe, is one of the world’s timeless cities. Its ancient cobbled streets are perfect for aimless wandering.

As with its northern neighbour, Porto, you can easily craft your own urban hiking route as you stroll between miradouros, pausing for a few cheeky pastel de natas and perhaps a sneaky glass of port or ginjinha (or two) along the way.

Wherever your trail leads, you will find towns and villages steeped in centuries of history and culture. No matter your destination, rest assured that you’ll be treated to some of Europe’s freshest seafood and finest cuisine.
